It's not the dog in the fight, but the fight in the dog.
Porsche returns to Le Mans prototype racing this year, and it’s invading the French 24-hour trial with the 919 hybrid you see here. Outwardly, the 919 hybrid doesn’t look all that different from, say, Audi’s dominant R18 e-tron Quattro,
with its low, wedge-shaped body and central vertical stabilizer. The
only Porsche-esque styling cues are the quad-beam headlight units that
echo the LED headlights offered on the Cayenne, Panamera, and 918 Spyder, plus a Porsche badge. What truly sets the Porsche apart, however, are its novel hybrid powertrain and bizarre engine layout.
Wait, It Has a V-What?
Taking a page right out of the venerable Saab Sonett’s playbook, Porsche
hath bestowed the 919 with a mid-mounted V-4 gasoline engine. Okay, so
unlike the 1970s-era Saab coupe’s, which was carbureted, the 919’s
2.0-liter gas mill features turbocharging and direct injection. Oh, and
it puts down “around” 500 horsepower and can rev to 9000 rpm. To this
banshee Porsche has strapped a generator driven by the engine’s (sure to
be prodigious) exhaust pressure, which sends electricity to a centrally
mounted lithium-ion battery pack. A motor/generator lives on the front
axle and can recuperate kinetic energy during braking and give the 919
short bursts of accelerative assistance when fed by the battery.
